The personal movie camera that was used
by silent screen legend, Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) in the
making of many of his classic films will be offered at Christie's
South Kensington on Wednesday 25 July 2007.
It is thought
that the Bell & Howell model
2709 no. 227 camera (estimate: £70,000-90,000/ 104,000-134,000
euros) would have been used by Chaplin in the making of many
of his films from 1918 until 1926, including the much-loved
classics The Kid (1921) and The Gold Rush (1925)
both widely acclaimed as the greatest films from his silent
film period. It was purchased by Chaplin in 1918 for use at
his newly-established Chaplin Studios in Hollywood , and comes
complete with a copy of the original purchase order.
