Best European Cinematographer nominees On the 1 st of December the winners will be announced in Berlin, during the 20th European Film Awards edition. Get to know this year's Best Cinematography nominees a bit better. Anthony Dod Mantle, DFF, BSC (1955, UK ) “The Last King of Scotland” by Kevin Macdonald Dod Mantle in the beginning of his career worked with, then debutant, awarded director Lone Scherfig (1990), then with acknowledged directors Philip Gröning and Carsten Rudolf. He collaborated with Thomas Vinterberg for the first time in 1996 and then again in “Festen” (1998) - the first of the Dogme/ manifest series. “Dogme # 3 - Mifunes sidste sang” (1999) by Anders Thomas Jensen and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen and “Dogme # 6 - Julien Donkey-Boy” (1999) by Harmony Korine followed. In the 2000's Dod Mantle does several works for television, working for the first time in a UK production with director Danny Boyle in “28 Days Later...” (2002) and years later in “Millions” (2004). He works with Vinterberg again in “It's All About Love” (2003), “Dear Wendy” (2005) (written by Lars von Trier) and “En Mand kommer hjem” (2007). Director Lars von Trier invites him for “Dogville” (2003) and “Manderlay” (2005). Recently he has collaborated again with Lone Scherfig in “Hjemve” (2007). Coming out in 2008 he has “Country Wedding” (2008) an Icelandic production directed by the debutant Valdís Óskarsdóttir (an awarded Icelandic editor). Soon, he will start shooting “Slumdog Millionaire” (2009) with director Danny Boyle. Among others, he has received honours by Camerimage, Robert Festival, Bodil Awards, Stockholm Film Festival, European Film Awards, British Independent Film Awards and Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema.
Frank Griebe (1965, Germany ) “Das Parfum – Die Geschichte Eines Mörders/ Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” by Tom Tykwer Having his career started in 1990 he has been working closely with director Tom Tykwer since then: “Because” (1990), “Epilog” (1992), “Die Tödliche Maria/ Deadly Maria”(1993), “Winterschläfer/ Wintersleepers” (1997), “Lola rennt/ Run, Lola, run” (1998), “Der Krieger und die Kaiserin/ The Princess and the Warrior” (2000), “Heaven” (2002), “True” (2004) and “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” (2006). He has also worked with Doris Dörrie, Leander Haußmann and Sönke Wortmann. Coming out soon he has “The International” (2008) directed once more by Tykwer. His work has been recognized by Brothers Manaki International Film Festival, Camerimage, European Film Awards, German Camera Award, German Film Awards, German Film Critics Association Awards and Marburg Camera Award.
Mikhail Krichman “Izgnanie/ Banishment” by Andrei Zvyagintsev Krichman 's work gained international visibility after the smashing success of “Vozvrashcheniye/ The Return” (2003) directed by Andrei Zvyagintsev granting his recognition by Camerimage, Nika Awards and Russian Guild of Film Critics. This is the second time both cinematographer and director work together.
Fabio Zamarion “La Sconosciuta/ The Unknown” by Giuseppe Tornatore Zamarion 's career started in 1985 and he has worked regularly both in film and television. He has collaborated in the highly awarded film “Respiro” (2002) by Emanuele Crialese and recently with acknoledged director Giuseppe Tornatore in “The Unknown”. A two times nominee for the David di Donatello Awards (2003, 2004) he has recently won Best Cinematography award for this film. Coming out soon he will have “Parmigiano” (2007) by debutant director Alex Warren.
