CIEN FUEGOS: Ten Cinematographers in Ten Films

Celebrating its 10 th anniversary, ADF – Argentinean Society of Cinematographers presents a film program that casts a look over cinematography in Argentinean film over the last thirty years. In this first part, and through an arbitrary selection (and this is good to state for the program could include so many other Cinematographers, as influent as the following, and so many other films equally important) ten films will be exhibited. Each one of them represents an important step in the cinematographer's career, whether it is for the maturity achieved in that specific work, for the aesthetic innovation or for the impact it had on the unconscious Argentinean collective.

It is also important to make clear – once again – that it is very had to find good film copies of Argentinean films, especially from those made more than fifteen years ago. Concerning this, we thank the collaboration of Malba, Filmoteca Bs. As., INCAA, the production companies and respective distributors, and we apologize for any imperfections that some projections may have. Definitely, ADF supports the project of an effective policy to preserve and restore Argentinean film patrimony.

Hugo Colace (ADF): It is interesting for me to remember each step of this wonderful film. When I finished reading the script, written by Lucrecia Martel, I was sure about how my work would look like, camera and photography wise, in order to create a suggestive atmosphere. I had seen Lucrecia's powerful short feature “Rey muerto” so I knew she was a detailed director and not very open to suggestions. Her wishes concerning the visual aspects were very clear and so I committed myself in fulfill them.

The story should be told strictly using the natural light effect. So I focoused on getting the essential of the registry; the characters movement in their own surroundings. They were the expression of a family situation that lived inside a sad and hopeless cosmos. The camera should act as if an anonymous family member was observing their actions. You shouldn't feel that the camera was “placed” despite it was always carefully decided where it should stand. The idea was to shot in a casual and free way with extensive use of hand held camera.

I imposed myself a “no” personal discipline: no to any photographic excess; no to trying to get the actors glamour; no to dwell the landscape. With obscure and foreboding skies, they should spread warmth, humidity and abandonment.

The result is one film conceived to show heavy images, of penetrating cold and hardness, in which each scene seems to come from afar, like if it was rescued form our memory.

I like what we achieved and the way we enjoyed ourselves working for this film. It was an interesting mix: on one side, the bold desire of a brave and novice director, one the other, a cinematographer with more experience than braveness, working to transform that desire in a beautiful film.

The film's good omen was justified when after fourteen years, for the first time, an Argentinean film was selected to participate in the Berlin International Film Festival. “La Ciénaga” was selected to compete in the 51 st edition of the festival having won the Silver Bear – the “Alfred Bauer” Award for Best First Feature Film.
