"Screenings of 19 (chosen from among over 300 submitted) best visually films, produced in 2005 and 2006. The movies, being judged by international Jury of directors, cinematographers, film critics and other film industry representatives, will compete for the GOLDEN FROG AWARD. BABEL


Cinematographer: RODRIGO PRIETO

Three stories set in Morocco , Tunisia , Mexico and Japan . The film begins with a tragedy striking a married couple on vacation. Contemporary version of biblical parable about building the Babel tower, in which lack of agreement between characters cause a tragedy.

RODRIGO PRIETO (1965, México City , México) starts his career in México doing short features between 1988 and 1990. In 1991 he does his first long feature. Until 1993 he does both short and long features; from then on he starts doing only long ones. He works for the first time with director Iñárritu in the world public acclaimed titled Amores Perros (2000)   - having then his first long feature experience. That same year he starts working in the USA doing titles like: Original Sin (2001) by Michael Cristofer, Frida (2002) by Julie Taymor,   8 Mile (2002) by Curtis Hanson, 25th Hour (2002) by Spike Lee and Comandante (2003) by Oliver Stone. In 2003 PRIETO works again with Iñárritu in 21 Grams and Oliver Stone has PRIETO again as his Director of Photography in his movie Alexander (2004). With director Ang Lee he has an Oscar nomination for Brokeback Mountain (2005) doing his most nominated and award winning film up until now of his career (Ariel Awards, Oscar, American Society of Cinematographers, BAFTA, etc). He has Se jie / Lust, Caution by Ang Lee, premiering in 2007.

Babel is the third collaboration, in a long feature, having RODRIGO PRIETO as Director of Photography, Guillermo Arriaga as screenwriter and Iñárritu directing ( Amores Perros , 21 Grams ). In 2006 Cannes festival, for Babel , Iñárritu has won Best Director and Prize of the Ecumenical Jury; Editor Stephen Mirrione has won, Best Technical Prize.

THE BLACK DAHLIA

"Based on a true unsolved murder. In the 1940s, a young and beautiful woman named Elizabeth Short came to Hollywood , destined to become a famous actress. However, her brutal murder in 1947 made her famously known as "The Black Dahlia" and revealed a conspiracy throughout the police department."

VILMOS ZSIGMOND (1930, Szeged , Hungary ) starts his career in 1955. During the 60's he works mainly with director James Landis. In 1971 Peter Fonda (after his big hit as scriptwriter in Easy Rider (1969)) chooses ZSIGMOND for his first directing long feature, The Hired Hand . He woks with director Robert Altman ( McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), Images (1972) and The Long Goodbye (1973)) and Steven Spielberg ( The Sugarland Express (1974) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) ). A few of his works are: The River (1984) by Mark Rydell, The Witches of Eastwick (1987) by George Miller, Maverick (1994) by Richard Donner, Sean Penn's second long feature The Crossing Guard (1995), The Mists of Avalon (2001) miniseries and Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda (2004). Premiering soon he has: Woody Allen's Untitled Woody Allen Summer Project (2007), Torn from the Flag (2006) by Jonathan Halperin; and Bolden! (2008) by Dan Pritzker. Among his several nominations and awards he was BAFTA nominated in 1971, 1972, 1972 and 1979, and has awarded by The Deer Hunter (1978) by Michael Cimino. Also, two Oscar nominations in 1979 and 1985 and na award in 1978 by Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). During his career time he has also won several international and domestic awards as director of TV commercials.

BOBBY

"The story of the assassination of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, on June 6th, 1968, which centers around 22 people who were at the Ambassador Hotel where he was killed."

MICHAEL BARRETT (1970, Califórnia , USA ) starts his career in 1996 and for two years he does short features. After that he starts doing long features and TV. Between 2001 and 2004 he shoots 36 episodes for the famous tv series CSI which has granted him nominations, and one award, by the American Society of Cinematographers. In 2005 he does: Lucky 13 by Chris Hall, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang by Shane Black and Goal! by Danny Cannon. In 2006 he shoots several episodes for "Close to Home" tv series and Bobby by Emilio Estevez that is currently the film he's being nominated for at Camerimage 2006. In 2007 he has The Mysteries of Pittsburgh by Rawson Marshall Thurber, premiering.

Bobby was awarded "Biografilm Award" by the Venice Film Festival 2006 and has also been nominated for the Golden Lion award.

This is MICHAEL BARRETT's first festival nomination for a long feature work in his career.

ASHLEY ROWE (1959, England , UK ) starts her career in 1986 doing shortly after several tv series that won her several BARTA awards. In 1997 she wins her fist award by Valladolid International Film Festival by 24 7: Twenty Four Seven (1997) by Shane Meadows - including Best Lighting Director. The Evening Standard British Film Awards award her, in 1999, Best Technical/Artistic Achievement award by The Woodlanders (1997), The Governess (1998), Still Crazy (1998) and 24 7: Twenty Four Seven (1997). Between 2000 and 2006 she has worked exclusively in long features having one exception only: in 2004 she's nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers for her television work The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (2003). Recently she has done titles like: Ali G Indahouse (2002) by Mark Mylod, Calendar Girls (2003) by Nigel Cole and Alfie (2004) by Charles Shyer. In 2006 she has worked on: Half Light (2006) by Craig Rosenberg featuring Demi Moore, Starter for Ten (2006) by Tom Vaughan and Copying Beethoven (2006) that is awarding her this Camerimage 2006 nomination. Premiering in 2007 Mike Barker's Butterfly on a Wheel (2007).

INDIGÈNES/ Days Of Glory

"1943. Saïd, Abdelkader, Messaoud and Yassir are going to join the French army to free the motherland from the Nazi enemy, like 130 000 other "natives". Patrick Blossier (1949) starts as Assistant Camera in 1974 doing his first Cinematographer work in 1980. During his career he has worked with several directors, among them: Agnès Varda ( Sans toit ni loi (1985), Jacquot de Nantes (1991) ); Mehdi Charef   ( Miss Mona (1987) and Camomille (1988));   Alain Tanner ( La Vallée fantôme (1987); Liria Bégéja ( Avril brisé (1987) and Loin des barbares (1994) ); Camille de Casabianca ( Après la pluie (1989) , Le Fruit de vos entrailles (1990) , Octavio (1991) , Le Fabuleux destin de Madame Petlet (1995) ); Bigas Luna ( La Femme de chambre du Titanic (1997) ) ; and most frequently with director Costa-Gavras ( Betrayed (1988), Music Box (1989), La Petite apocalypse (1993), Mad City (1997), Amen. (2002) and Le Couperet (2005) ). Among his most recent works he has Andrzej Zulawski's La Fidélité (2000) and Cédric Kahn's   Feux rouges (2004). In 2006, besides Indigènes he has shot Mon colonel (2006) by Laurent Herbiet. Throughout his career he was nominated both by César (France) and Goya Awards ( Spain ).

Indigènes has been nominated for the Golden Pam in Cannes Film Festival 2006 and has won Best Actor award (for best male ensemble cast).

Carol Carver is a novelist, wife and mother who spends all her days at the slot machines, gambling away her family's savings. Murph is a low-level bookie striving to hide his occupation from the woman he loves. Clyde Snow loves to bet on college basketball."

ROBBIE GREENBERG starts his career in 1978. Throughout his career he has worked with directors like Wes Creven ( Swamp Thing (1982) ), Robert Redford ( The Milagro Beanfield War (1988)), Sam   Shepard ( Far North (1988) ) and Simon Wincer ( Free Willy (1993) ). After Rydell's Even Money he has worked in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006) by Michael Lembeck and premiering in 2007 he has, Wild Hogs (2007) by Walt Becker. He was awarded several times for his work on television both by the American Society of Cinematographers and the Emmy Awards.

TOM STERN has been working mostly as gaffer and "chief lighting technician" since 1977. His career as Cinematographer started as Director of Photography by Clint Eastwood's side in Blood Work (2002). Since then they have collaborated regularly: Mystic River (2003) (nominated by Satellite Awards in 2004) and Million Dollar Baby (2004). In 2005 he has done The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) by Scott Derrickson and Romance & Cigarettes (2005) by John Turturro. YVES CAPE (1960, Belgium ) starts his career as Cinematographer in 1990. During the 80's he works mainly with director Alain Berliner ( Rose (1993), Ma vie en rose (1997) and Le Mur (1998)). With Stéphane Clavier he does Lovely Rita, sainte patronne des cas désespérés (2003) and Patron sur mesure (2002) (TV). In 2004 he is awarded by the Asia-Pacific Film Festival for Mua len trau (2004) by Minh Nguyen-Vo (a Vietnam / Belgium / France production). Premiering soon he has Vent mauvais (2007) by Stéphane Allagnon.

CAPE has worked previously with Bruno Dumont in L' Humanité (1999) that was nominated   for Best Cinematography by the European Film Awards 1999 edition.

Flanders has won Grand Prize of the Jury and was nominated for the Golden palm by Cannes Film Festival 2006.

THE FOUNTAIN

"The main character of the film is the man who is searching for immortality. Such a power is to be given to him by "the tree of life", which is situated somewhere in the Middle America and has been searched through ages. Finally that is the death which is to be a part of a new rebirth."

MATTHEW LIBATIQUE (1969, New York , USA ) starts doing short features in 1991 and his career beginnings are closely linked with Aronofsky's. In 2000 he works for the first time with director Joel Schumacher in Tigerland (2000) and later in Phone Booth (2002). In 2003 he does Gothika (2003) by Mathieu Kassovitz. Recently he has done She Hate Me (2004) and Inside Man (2006) with director Spike Lee.

LIBATIQUE has previously worked with director Darren Aronofsky. Besides starting his career Aronofsky   doing shorts, he also does his fist long feature with him in 1995. In 1998 they work together again, this time in the alterative circle acclaimed film Pi (1998); and then again, in the widely awarded, and nominated, Requiem for a Dream (2000). The Fountain is their most recent collaboration.

HEAVEN'S DOORS

"Three episodes of Heaven's Doors are linked by a revenge murder and by a motif of mothers' influence on their children's lives and vice versa, which is below the surface of the main action. The first story is about Ney, a young construction worker, closely tied to his blind, overprotective mother and little sister. When his friends persuade him to work for a powerful local gangster, the story heads for tragedy."

PAULO ARES starts his career in 1994 doing short features in Portugal with directors Pedro Sena Nunes, Sandro Aguilar, José Barahona, Ivo Ferreira, Jeanne Waltz, Teresa Garcia, Carlos Braga and Margarida Leitão. Heaven's Doors is Ares first long feature. Also in 2006 he has done a second long feature Body Rice (2006) by Hugo Vieira da Silva.

Heaven's Doors was nominated for Grand Prix by Flanders International Film Festival.

CASA DE AREIA/ The House Of The Sand

This is the story of three generations of women who lead their life full of profound emotions ranging from despair to fulfillment. Áurea arrives at town in Maranhāo with her husband and mother, who is her only female companion. Her husband, Vasco, believes this land to be prosperous and she is condemned to a life in this barren place in a house on a top of dune. Pregnant and dissatisfied with her destiny she dreams of getting out of this place. However, years go by but women are still stuck at a labyrinth of sand.

RICARDO DELLA ROSA starts his career in 2002 by Andrucha Waddington's side in two long   musical/ documentaries. In 2004 he collaborates with Jayme Monjardim in Olga (2004) - a film that gets several awards and nominations by Cinema Brazil Grand Prize 2005.

In 2005 DELLA ROSA works for the third time with Waddington in Casa de Areia (2005).

Casa de Areia (2005) was awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize and a nominated for Grand Jury Prize by Sundance Film Festival 2006.

DICK POPE (1947, England UK) starts his career as camera operator in 1963 doing his first long feature as Cinematographer in 1980 with director Wolfgang Büld. During the 80 he works on several long features and tv series. He has worked with several directors but more frequently with Mike Leigh in Life Is Sweet (1990), A Sense of History (1992) (TV), Naked (1993), Secrets & Lies (1996), Career Girls (1997), Topsy-Turvy (1999), All or Nothing (2002/I) and Vera Drake (2004). In 2006, besides The Illusionist he has done Man of the Year (2006) by Barry Levinson. He was awarded by Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival 1990 by The Reflecting Skin (1990) by Philip Ridley and has a TV nomination by BAFTA in 1988.

JASMINUM

"Jasminum is a story about a small monk community. Monastery wouldn't differ much from others but for the fact that three of the monks have a characteristic scent. One of them smells like a bird cherry, another like cherry tree and the third one, like a plum tree. One day, a young woman, a painting conservator, appears in a monastery. She is to restore local paintings. Natasza is accompanied by her five-year-old daughter, Gienia. The girl's charm and curiosity bring confusion into monks' calm life."

KRZYSZTOF PTAK starts his career in 1981 working several times with director Grzegorz Królikiewicz. Later he works closely with director Leszek Wosiewicz ( Kornblumenblau (1989), Wigilia (1990), Cynga (1992) and director Andrzej Baranski ( Tabu (1988) Dzien wielkiej ryby (1996) ). Also with Andrzej Wajda in Panna Nikt (1996) and Wojciech Marczewski in Weiser (2001). He was awarded by Polish Film Festival (1990, 2002) and by Polish Film Awards (1999, 2004, 2005). Premiering in 2007 he has Nadzieja (2007) by Stanislaw Mucha.

PTAK has worked previously with Jan Jakub Kolski in Czas zdrady (1997), Historia kina w Popielawach (1998) and Pornografia (2003). These last two titles were the ones awarded by Polish Film Awards. Jasminum (2006) in their most recent collaboration.

PALIMPSEST

"Marek, the main character of Palimpsest, is a police inspector, a man on the verge of psychological disintegration trying to solve an intricate case. The story is told on two planes. The first one is a crime story, which constitutes the framework of the film. In the course of events, another theme appears - psychological experiences of the main character. He came into a state of mind which it's hard to tell reality from imagination in."

ARKADIUSZ TOMIAK (1969, Koszalin , Poland ) starts his carer on televison in 1997. He does his first long feature with director Jan Jakub Kolski ( Daleko od okna (2000)). In 2006 he has also done Statysci (2006) by Michal Kwiecinski. He was awarded by the Polish Film Festival by Daleko od okna (2000) and Statysci (2006). Symetria (2003) by Konrad Niewolski granted him a nomination by the Polish Film Awards 2005 and recently he was awarded Best Artistic Contribution by Montréal World Film Festival by Masz na imie Justine (2005) directed by Franco de Pena.

EL LABERINTO DEL FAUNO/ Pan's Labyrinth

"Ofelia, a dreamy little girl, moves to the rural military outpost with her mother and step father, after Franco's victory. She is lost and lonely in the world fulfilled with cruelty and monsters - both human and imaginary. Sympathetic housekeeper shows her neglected, old garden labyrinth, which becomes Ofelia's heaven. GUILLERMO NAVARRO (1965, México City, México) starts his career in 1973. Throughout his career he has worked with director Robert Rodriguez in Desperado (1995), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) and Spy Kids (2001). He has also collaborated in titles like Spawn (1997) by Mark A.Z. Dippé, Jackie Brown (1997) by Quentin Tarantino and Stuart Little (1999) by Rob Minkoff. In 2006 he has also done Night at the Museum (2006) by Shawn Levy.

He has worked previously with director Guillermo del Toro in Cronos (1993), El Espinazo del diablo (2001) and Hellboy (2004). Premiering in 2008 they have Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (2008).

El Laberinto del Fauno was nominated by Cannes Film Festival 2006 for Golden Palm.
