BEST CINEMATOGRAPHER NOMINATIONS

The European Film Academy has announced its nominations for European Film Awards (EFA) 2006 last Saturday, the 4th of November. Nominated for best EUROPEAN CINEMATOGRAPHER category are: BARRY ACKROYD (BSC), JOSÉ LUIS ALCAINE (AEC), ROMAN OSIN (BSC) and TIMO SALMINEN (FSC/AIP).

 

BARRY ACKROYD for THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY

Director: Ken Laoch

(other EFA category nominations: film, director, actor and screenwriter)

BARRY ACKROYD (b. 1954, UK ) starts his career in 1987. In 1989 works for the first time with Director Ken Loach for a TV documentary "The View from the Woodpile". From then on both have collaborated frequently in several titles like: "Riff-Raff" (1990), "Raining Stones" (1993), "Ladybird Ladybird" (1994), "Land and Freedom" (1995), "Carla's Song" (1996), "My Name Is Joe" (1998), "Bread and Roses" (2000), "The Navigators" (2001), "Sweet Sixteen" (2002) and "Fond Kiss..., Ae" (2004). ACKROYD has also recently worked with TV directors Stephen Poliakoff and Dominic Savage. During his career time, he has had several BAFTA, British Independent Film Awards and Camerimage nominations. In 2002 he has won "Best Duo: Director - Cinematographer" at Camerimage along with Ken Loach. For one of their collaborations, "Sweet Sixteen", ACKROYD was awarded both by Valladolid International Film Festival (2002) and Brothers Manaki International Film Festival (2003). He's currently affiliated with British Society of Cinematographers - UK .

He is now filming with director Stuart Townsend, "The Battle in Seattle ". The film features actors Charlize Theron, Andre Benjamin, Woody Harrelson, among others, and is expected to premiere in 2008. Film locations are in Seattle (USA) and Vancouver ( Canada ).

 

JOSÉ LUIS ALCAINE for VOLVER (To Return)

Director: Pedro Almodóvar

JOSÉ LUIS ALCAINE (b. 1938, Morocco ) starts his career in1965 doing his first long feature in 1967. In the seventies he works mainly with directors Guillermo F. Zúñiga, Manuel Summers and Gabriel Blanco. In the eighties he does several short/ documentaries with directors Manuela García de la Veja and Máximo Martín Ortiz. He also works with directors Jaime Camino, Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, Fernando Fernán Gómez, Antonio Giménez Rico, Carlos Saura and José Luis García Sánchez. From the nineties on he collaborates with directors Vicente Aranda, Fernando Trueba, John Malkovich, Eduard Cortés and more frequently with Bigas Luna. Along his career time he has had several important nominations: of his 13 nominations by Goya Awards he has won 4 (1990, 1993, 1994, 2003) - none of them from an Almodóvar collaboration. In 2005 he's awarded the Silver Condor by the Argentinean Film Critics Association Awards for "La Puta y la ballena" (2004) by Luis Puenzo. ALCAINE has previously worked with Pedro Almodóvar in: "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios/ Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" (1988), "¡Átame!/ Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!" (1990) and "La Mala educación/ Bad Education" (2004). For this last one he was nominated by EFA 2004. He's currently affiliated with Asociación Española de Autores de Obras Fotográficas Cinematográficas - Spain.

Since "Volver/ To Return" he has done several titles for the big screen: "Tirante el Blanco" (2006) by Vicente Aranda, "Tu vida en 65 minutos" (2006) by María Ripoll and "Teresa, muerte y vida" (2006) by Ray Loriga.

 

ROMAN OSIN for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

ROMAN OSIN (b. 1961, Germany ) starts his career with director Asif Kapadia doing short features. In 2001, he does his fist long feature with Kapadia, "The Warrior". This seems to have been a happy collaboration for the film was awarded by BAFTA and British Independent Film Awards having received several nominations and awards by other festivals that acclaimed the film as a new valuable discovery. For "The Warrior", OSIN has won Best Cinematography by British Independent Film Awards and San Sebastián International Film Festival having also received a nomination by Camerimage (Golden Frog). Also in 2001, OSIN works in Christos Georgiou's awarded drama "Kato apo ta asteria/ Under the Stars". The next year, 2002, he has his first German collaboration with Maria von Heland in "Große Mädchen weinen nicht/ Big Girls Don't Cry". Both Paul Feig's "I Am David" (2003) and "Mickybo and Me" (2004) by Terry Loane win several awards across many festivals in the USA and in the Irish IFTA Awards. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has been nominated and awarded in big and smaller festivals around the world for several categories - including by the Oscars and BAFTA. Chicago Film Critics Association Awards has nominated OSIN's collaboration in this film. He's currently affiliated with British Society of Cinematographers - UK .

After "Pride and Prejudice" OSIN has filmed again with director Asif Kapadia, The Return (2006) and premiering in 2007 he has "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" directed by Zach Helm.

 

TIMO SALMINEN for LAITAKAUPUNGIN VALOT (Lights In The Dusk)

Director: Aki Kaurismäki

TIMO SALMINEN (b. 1952, Finland ) since the beginning of his career in 1981 has worked as Cinematographer in 36 films. Of those, impressively, 26 are a collaboration either with director Aki Kaurismäki or with Mika Kaurismäki (Aki's older brother). He has been nominated 5 times by Finish Jussi Awards having won in 1991, 1995 and 2003 - all Aki's features. In 1990 and 2002 he was nominated for Golden Frog by Camerimage that has awarded him the Bronze Frog for Aki's "Juha" (1999) and also Best Duo: Director - Cinematographer along with Aki Kaurismäki in 2004. He's currently affiliated both with Suomen Elokuvaajien Yhdistys - Finland and Associação de Imagem Portuguesa - Portugal .

"Laitakaupungin Valot/ Lights In The Dusk" has been nominated in 2006 for the Grand Prix by the Flanders International Film Festival and for Golden Palm awarded by Cannes .

The European Film Awards, on its 19th edition, will award a 14 prizes total, for different categories, though only 10 of them have a nomination list : European Film, Director, Actress, Actor, CINEMATOGRAPHER, Screenwriter, Composer, Discovery, Documentary and Short Film. Winners will be announced on the 2 nd of December, in Warsaw (Poland), during a cermony promoted by the European Film Academy.
