PROFESSOR – FILM AND TELEVISION, CINEMATOGRAPHY
The University of Art and Design Helsinki, Finland seeks for Cinematography Professor.
1. Purpose of the Instructions for Appointments
The Instructions for Appointments have been prepared for the assessors and others involved in the filling of the post. The Instructions contain the information referred to in the Decree on the Appointment of Professors and Associate Professors (Asetus korkeakoulun professorin ja apulaisprofessorin viran täyttämisestä,1581/1991), as well as information on the duties of the post and operations of the relevant institute.
2. The post to be filled
The area of the teaching and research post is in Film and TV
Studies, especially Cinematography.
The salary is equivalent to the Finnish A28 wage level for public service employees being 3.600 – 4.600 euro/month depending on personal experience and length of service in the field. Due to the introduction of a new wage system in 2006 wages will become dependant on the demands of the post and personal performance.
The post will be filled for the time period of five years.
3. The University, The School
The post is situated in the School of Motion Picture. Television and Production
Design at the University of Art and Design, Helsinki (Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu).
4. Duties included in the post
Duties in accordance with the Finnish statute concerning competence requirements
(309/93) are as follows:
The professor must carry out and guide artistic and research work, follow the development of film and cinematic art and cinematographic technology, science and research in his/her particular field as well as examine studies and scholarly thesis. In addition he/she must advance the education of the field, tutor students’ studies, put into practice the examinations that he/she is responsible for, deliver the necessary accounts of his/her tuition, as well as of his/her publications, scientific and artistic activities and the given examinations. The professor must be responsible for the duties that fall to him/her through the membership of administrative bodies or that have been appointed to him/her, and is expected to participate in the process of student selection to a reasonable extent.
Content of the Duties
The Professor is in charge of planning, realization and developing of curriculum and research in his/her field together with the head of school, the other professors of the department and the lecturers and other staff. His/her duties also include theoretical and practice based lecturing and teaching cinematography and creating networks and maintaining collaborative relationships with interest groups internationally as well as on domestic level, especially with partnership film schools and universities that undertake and develop research work in the field, as well as within the industry in general.
Working hours
According to the existing collective agreement working hours of teaching staff is defined as overall full working time which is 1600 hours a year. The duties are defined in more detail in the working plan.
5. Competence requirements
Requirements:
The post requires artistic competence, teaching skills and practical knowledge in the field
of the post.
The artistic competence of the applicant will be evaluated taking into consideration the applicant’s artistic merits and credits, publications and productions, scientific achievements and academic degrees and other relevant evidence of theoretical and practical mastery of the field.
When estimating teaching skills, pedagogical education, practical skills acquired in teaching, expertise in producing teaching material of value, ability to execute and plan applied theoretical and practical curriculum, other achievements in teaching and teaching abilities demonstrated in a test lessons, will be considered.
Knowledge of Languages:
We expect the person selected to the post to possess excellent knowledge of the English language. Finnish and Swedish language skills are beneficial but not compulsory.
6. Qualification requirements and their evaluation
In addition to the presentation of formal competence requirements applicants to the post should show complementary competence in the field and are expected to have
leadership skills, organizational and collaborative abilities and have international experience in the field. Academic degree, excellent command of English language and extensive professional experience as a cinematographer in the film- and TV-industry, are considered merits and are beneficial as well as wide experience in teaching, designing curriculum and leading research programs.
7. Application procedure
The post will be filled through a public application procedure advertised nationally and internationally. Applications for the post must be made in writing. Applications should be addressed to the University of Art and Design Helsinki (Registry).
Applicants should send the following documents for the evaluators as attachments to their application:
1) curriculum vitae;
2) list of publications or artistic works;
3) the publications or a portfolio on artistic work the relevant to the post;
4) a numbered list of important artistic productions and publications, and other publications, with which the applicant wishes to demonstrate his or her competence and merits;
5) teaching portfolio or other presentation on pedagogical competence.
6) publications, at least two copies of each and numbered as in the list mentioned in section 4, and a folder with pictures illustrating the artistic productions and other material relevant to the productions.
The University has not restricted the number of publications and other works which may be presented to the experts. The applicants must however present a brief written account on their most significant merits and artistic or scientific work which the applicant wishes to be taken into consideration in assessing their qualifications and accomplishments.
8. Procedure for filling the post and estimate of the timetable
As an aid for the appointments’ secretary a committee can be established whose role is to act as an unofficial preparatory body for the decisions on filling the post.
After the application period the Board of the School of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design will propose experts who will evaluate the applicants’
qualification and merits. Before the experts are selected, applicants shall be given an opportunity to present their objections concerning the possible disqualification of the proposed experts. The experts are chosen by the University.
After the expert statements have come in, the Board will decide whether the applicants
shall have an opportunity to give a test lesson.
The applicants can also be interviewed by the committee or by the experts.
The Board will make an appointment proposal in which the three applicants of greatest merit are proposed for appointment to the post in the order in which they are considered suitable for the post in terms of their skills and abilities.
Applicants shall have the possibility to submit an objection concerning the appointment proposal to the university's rector within thirty (30) days of the date when the decision was made.
Professors are appointed by the Board of the University of Art and Design.
