With the progress of technologies and with the evolution of new means of diffusion, have in part motivated French cinematographers to organize a debate to redefine the role of the cinematographer in the process of creating a film. The debate is called the “Charter of Image” with the intention to discuss precisely the role of the cinematographer during the different steps to create the image for cinema. The intention is to find ways to protect the integrity of the work of the cinematographer no matter what means of diffusion used.
In this debate every one is invited to discuss the progress of new technologies and its influence on the cinematographers work.
The principal goals of the present Charter are:
-To support the director in his or her creative task and to give us the means to defend the integrity of the work in all its visual aspects, as much as a mark of respect for the audience, as for its authors.
-To enable, in conjunction with the producer, the research and implementation of the necessary means, compatible with the project’s budget. In this perspective, and because cinema production, post-production and distribution technologies are always evolving, it is necessary to redefine the obligations and responsibilities of the director of photography.
