The legends:

The legend award is the recognition by the Hungarian society to Laszlo Kovacs, Vilmos Zsigmond, Gyorgy Illés and Janos Toth. These four men share a common part in their live history.

Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the escape of two young cinematographer students from their home land as political refugees. In November 1956 Russian Army has entered in Budapest to crash a popular uprising against the communist regime on power at the time.

Both Kovac and Vilmos have escaped from Budapest crossing neighboring borders with around 3000 meters of footage with images captured during the clash between the Russian army and civilians.

In 1957 both immigrated to the United States where they became well cinematographers. Vilmos Zsigmond has won an Oscar for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and several nominations. Kovacs was the cinematographer of films like “Easy Rider” and “New York, New York.”

Both Hungarians didn’t loose contact with their home land and in special with the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest. Both kept in touch with their teacher Gyorgy Illés who has influenced them to run away during the uprising.
