World premiere during IDIFF 2005 with the launch of the first experimentation platform for digital cinema cameras.
For its third edition, which will take place from 2 to 4 February 2005 in the Palais des Festivals of Cannes, IDIFF creates a real motion-picture studio in order to experiment the new generations of digital cinema cameras.
A global offer
All the manufacturers on the market have responded favourably to this world premiere. Each one will have a slot in time of half a day to assure the promotion but also the presentation with the possibility for each attendee to test, in real conditions, the different models exhibited. Panavision will show the Genesis, in presence of its president, Bob Beitcher. Thomson Grass Valley will come with the Viper and the different recorders designed for it. Sony will propose, in test, its new models equipped with the "hypergamma" adjustments. Finally, Panasonic, with the Varicam series and Arriflex with the D20 will also be present.
The manufacturers of peripheral equipments, Canon, Fujinon and Band Pro will complete these demonstrations with their specific HD series.
Studio
IDIFF is setting up a true shooting studio in oder to welcome the new generation of digital cinema cameras.
A spectacle presenting a certain number of visual difficulties has been especially designed by Philippe Ros (director of the photography) and Philippe Coroyer (director) in order to offer to operators, directors and producers the possibility to test these new tools and their peripheral equipments (lenses, viewfinders, monitors, recorders...) under real shooting conditions.
The concept
"It seemed interesting to us, for the first time, in the framework of such an event, to realise a direct acquisition with the help of an appropriate scenography, which gathers a certain number of visual difficulties dedicated to highlight the capacities of these new tools" says Etienne Traisnel, organiser of IDIFF. The purpose of this studio is to confront the experiences of the manufacturers and of the cinematographers, and to assess the qualities of the cameras, through an ensemble of precise picture characteristics:
To do so, a certain number of means are implemented:
Creation of a show by the company Alterego in order to recreate the different constraints of the shooting process, including the construction of the decoration and the conception of the scenography.
Installation of the stage and the lights with the technical means of Panavision. The lights and the machinery will be identical to those used on a cinema stage.
Possibility to visualise the shots and to colour grade them in screening rooms (6m wide screens) equipped with DLP Cinema projectors.
The team
Philippe Ros, Director of Photography, is technical consultant and relay to manufacturers and post-producers.
Philippe Coroyer, Director and Director of Photography, is responsible for the conception and the realisation of the studio in partnership with the production company Alterego.
Jean-Noël Ferragut, Director of Photography (AFC), is responsible for the image acquisition.
EDCF
IDIFF will host a meeting of the EDCF technical module on Friday February 4, 2005
List of exhibitors
In addition to the presence of twenty stands on the exhibition zone, IDIFF proposes to cinema professionals a real platform of experimentation, in particular in the fields of acquisition and post-production.
