Because of the fact that no book on the history of Cinematography FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY has not yet been produced anywhere, even during the celebration of the first centenary of the 7th Art, IMAGO thinks that such a publication, largely well illustrated and printed as an art book (±460 pages, 24cm w x 28cm h), may stress that the story of the Cinema is very close to the story of the development of an universal visual language. This Book is not only dedicated to cinematographers but further more may become a standard for professional education which might ensure the future of European cinematography.
On the other hand, this book may show to movie-goers around the world, how important the cinematographic impact and quality is in relation to the work of the Producers, the Directors, the Authors, the Actors, the Score Composers and the other Artists and/or Technicians involved in the making of what they love: Film.

Last but not least, this book may become a guideline (reference book) for institutional bodies who deal with the promotion and distribution of national film art in Europe.
To achieve these aims, the IMAGO-BOOK OFFICE, based in Vienna and run by Monika and Frédéric-Gérard Kaczek, AAC, is collecting appropriate articles and photographs from all over Europe. Roger Sears, an independent book editorial consultant based in Oxford supports IMAGO in helping, among others, to find an appropriate way to produce and distribute the book.
Zoe Bicât, Michael Leitch, Cathy Greenhalgh and Barry Salt, all four based in the United Kingdom, are now compiling all the items and writing several texts. The Editorial Board including delegates from the founder Members of IMAGO plus Sweden and Austria will have the final control about the content, before going into press.

Because of the fact that each European country has its own culture and this culture is reflected in its own language, we decided to use English only as a working language but to translate the final manuscript into several languages of our community.

We are proud to mention here that the European Community has approved the project as a book of reference and intends to support the idea of translations into French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Swedish.
Because it took longer than intended to complete the book - it was and is extremely difficult to obtain in time the rights to reproduce original frame enlargements from the relevant films - the European Commission withdraw its commitment and suggested IMAGO to re-enter an application as soon as the book is completed, at least in one language. Today the English version is in production and except the Polish translation, the five others are completed.

The IMAGO Book "MAKING PICTURES - A CENTURY OF EUROPEAN CINEMATOGRAPHY" (working title) will be distributed by book publishers like ABRAMS in the United States of America and AURUM in the United Kingdom and through the national associations of cinematographers. Agreements with further publishers are actually in negotiation.
The first delivery of the English version is scheduled for December 2002 - the 10th anniversary of our federation.
