Launch of IMAGE FORUM Web site.

A new web site giving impartial information for Cinematographers, Directors and Producers has been launched at Cannes. The creation of the Image Forum ( www.theimageforum.org ) was inspired by a BBC anti-film dictate nearly four years ago unilaterally declaring that Super 16mm film would not be used after 2010. This discredited threat has, fortunately for the artistic freedom of choice for the director and cinematographer, receded and Super 16mm continues to be used by the BBC. Indeed the dictate encouraged the grown of 2 and 3 perforation 35mm now being used increasingly for television productions on film. In the light of the dogmatic promulgation by the BBC in 1996 would be interesting to know whether such subsequent Oscar winning films shot on Super 16mm such as The Hurt Locker, The Wrestler or The Man on the Wire will ever be shown on BBC High definition television?

The Image Forum is an association of representatives from a broad range of industry companies and professions (Imago is a proud founder member). Its function is to address issues relating to the image quality of International feature film and television productions. It has been created to fill a gap in the objective information available, particularly to the Director and Producer. The Image Forum intends to examine impartially how new workflows combining analogue and digital processes can maximise the choice of tools available to film and programme makers without undermining the final output quality.

The new website will report technical data and industry tests but will not offer an opinion of the data provided or the tests carried out. The information is to assist freedom for Cinematographers, Directors and Producers in the making of creative decisions.
