50th Anniversary
Congratulations to BSC members Remi Adefarasin, BSC and Richard Greatrex, BSC who have received ASC Award nominations for their cinematography on 'ELIZABETH' and 'SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE'.
The British Society of Cinematographers unveiled a bust of William Friese Greene 1855-1921 entitled 'The First Cinematographer' by Diana Thomson FRBS in the Hallway of the Old House, outside the BSC Club Room at Shepperton Studios on Friday 15th January 1999 to mark the start of their 50th Anniversary Year.
With the support of the Kodak President's Fund, The British Society of Cinematographers
are currently hosting a series of 'Question and Answer' screenings for
cinematography students and camera department personnel at Pinewood Studios.
Following on from LAND GIRLS (Henry Braham BSC) and FIRELIGHT (Nic Morris BSC), HIDEOUS
KINKY (John de Borman) , THE MASK OF ZORRO (Phil Meheux), THE HI -LO COUNTRY was run last
night on 28th January with director of Photography Oliver Stapleton fielding
questions from the floor.
Dante Spinotti, AIC won the BSC Best Cinematography Award 1997-8 for his
outstanding cinematography of 'L.A. CONFIDENTIAL'. The award was announced at Pinewood
Studios at Operators Night on Friday 4th December 1998. The other nominees

In the New Years Honours List the following BSC members were given the following prestigious honours:
JOE DUNTON - M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire)
OSSIE MORRIS - O.B.E.(Officer of the Order of the British Empire)
At the BSC's annual OPERATORS NIGHT dinner,hosted by president Mike Southon, Alex Thompson won the Best Cinematography award for Hamlet. The prize was presented by Sir Sydney Samuelson CBE, retiring British Film Commissioner. In his acceptance speech Alex praised the crew of both A and B units stating that a DOP never makes a movie on his own.
Jeanne-Pierre Beaviala accepted The Bert Easey Technical Award and praised British Films, saying how they were more appreciated in France than in the UK, "British Films", he said "Were not much ado about nothing"
Mike Southon read the citation and reminisced about two days spent in Jeanne Pierre's company at Madrid Imagen in 1996. He alluded to Jeanne Pierre's prelidiction for smoking all of Mike's supply of Havana cigars. Mike talked of the first time he held the Aaton LTR and what a revelation it was.
In an emotional speech Joe Dunton accepting the John Alcott memorial Award expressed his wish that as conditions and hours got tougher and tougher it was important for all sides of the industry to respect each other and pull together.
In an amusing "double act" Ossie Morris read the citation and presented the BSC Lifetime Acheivment award to Freddie Francis. He talked about their early days together and how short Freddie Francis is compared to him making much play of reducing the height of the microphone for Freddie's acceptance speech.
Sir Sydney samuelson CBE spoke of his work at The British Film Commission and how impressed he was with the new UK government's determination to help the British Film Industry. He spoke passionately about the British Cinematography Trust.
Andy Cooper spoke movingly about his father Freddie Cooper who has recently died. He told two anecdotes that summed up what a marvellous person Freddie was and hoped many in the room would pass on the legion of other stories so that he collect them.
Approximately four thousand pounds was raised for two charities, The Great ormond Street Children's Hospital and the Cinema Benevolent Fund.
